Ginger, My Best Friend During Ramadan's Suhoor

Ramadan is approaching. Muslims all over the world will have to fast during the day for the whole month. Here in Indonesia, Ramadan is predicted to come in 26th May 2016 according to astronomical hisab method. But that date is not a fixed date yet until the government establish an itsbat meeting which combine the hisab and rukyah method. Hisab is based on a calculated theory of seeing hilal. Hilal itself is the first crescent right at the time when the sun comes down. While rukyah is a method to see hilal by naked eye or by specific tool from the surface of the Earth.

It’s been a long argument between the hisab and the rukyah method followers which one is the most valid. But, Rasulullaah Muhammad (PBUH) himself used the rukyah method.

Okay, let’s not talk about the argumentation. I’m going to tell you about ginger, my best friend during Ramadan’s suhoor.

As you know, ginger is abundance here in Indonesia. It’s a kind of perennial root. It's aromatic and tastes hot, good to make traditional drinks such as wedang ronde, wedang uwuh or wedang jancruk. Ginger is also good to be mix with coffee, tea or milk. Oh, I like ginger tea and ginger milk.

For some time, I used to serve tea for our Ramadan’s suhoor. Hot tea after eating late supper is great, I guess. However, I found some discomforts with it. I needed to go to the toilet very often at the start of the day. It’s because tea contains a specific ingredient that trigger urination. Beside that, I had a problem with my stomach so I can’t consume tea too often. So, I think I need to replace the menu, but I wasn’t sure what it would be.

Until then I tried to drink warm ginger for the suhoor. My stomach feels good with warm ginger drink. I’m very glad to know this. Then I offered it to my husband, and he likes it too. After that, we always have warm ginger for our drink during Ramadan’s suhoor. Our stomach feel fine and our body feel fresher as well. Alhamdulillaah.

I just wash the root and chop it into small pieces, then I boil the pieces with water. Serve it warm. Very good. You may add some sugar if you like, but I heard that consuming too much sugar during suhoor is not healthy as it trig the feeling of thirsty along the day. The best way to maintain ourselves fit during fasting is consuming enough water. Two glass of water for iftar, four glass of water along the night and two glass of water while we have suhoor.

Well, that’s all my story about having ginger for Ramadan’s suhoor. What’s your story about your Ramadan’s suhoor, guys? You can drop your comments here. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. In my earlier years, my family often includes sweet tea for suhoor and ifthar. After getting married, and knowing that my husband is not really like sweet drinks, we never have it anymore. And I feel it is convenient for me, as I don't have to boil the water to make tea. :D

Ginger drink as a replacement for tea is good. Maybe I should try to make some for suhoor :)
