Jaundice, After 7 Years

"He's so adorable," said my husband. I smiled and looked at that sleeping little guy.

"I bet you enjoy raising a baby this time," I said to my husband.

Yes, after 7 years we have a baby again. And unlike the first and the second baby, our third baby was born in a different condition. This time we have settled and have a better living.

I see that my husband really can enjoy raising his third son. It's shown on how he holds the baby with his hands. He is more confidence now! LOL.

This third baby, we named him Digdaya, looks like our second son. Digdaya means 'strong' and this baby is strong indeed.

What's so special having a baby again after 7 years?

Both my husband and I look younger by having this baby. How come? People who don't really know us thought that Digdaya is our first baby. Even the doctor. LOL again.

However, that 7 years also gives us something to learn: how to raise a baby. Both of us agree to confess that we have forgotten some things in how to raise a baby. It's like Digdaya is really our first baby.

It seemed so true until Digdaya suffer from jaundice due to the lack quantity of my breast milk. Jaundice is a condition where the skin becomes yellow, and sometimes the eyes as well. In that condition, baby's body has high number of bilirubin, the ruined red blood cells. A healthy baby should has 0 number of bilirubin and my Digdaya got 17!

I couldn't believe the fact that my baby had to stay 3 days at the hospital underwent 2,5 sessions of phototherapy. A phototherapy is when a baby being treated under blueish ray in a baby box. Each session itself takes 24 consecutive hours.

Can you imagine that? I slept 3 nights alone without my newborn baby beside me. I left him behind at the hospital. I was so frustated.

Every morning and afternoon I came to the hospital to see him and brought my pumped breast milk. I couldn't hold back my tears every time I saw him in that box. Oh, God.

After those 2,5 sessions he was stated to be healthy and he could go home. I was very, very happy. I held him in my arms like never before and brought him back home. To tell you the truth, I was scared that I could lose him. And I couldn't believe I raised this third baby the wrong way!

Now, every morning I bring him out about 10-15 minutes to warm him under the sun's ultraviolet. Without any shirt, only with diaper on him so that his back, chest, stomach, arms and legs get warm.

But, that activity is not the most important. What so urgent is the baby drink enough milk. To support that, I have no other choice than providing formula for him as well. Breast milk plus formula. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to do it either, but, I can't take the risk to have a sick baby anymore. No, no.

I understand that every choice has a risk. All I can do is pray and do all my best to maintain good quality and quantity of my breast milk.

eat good food

After 7 years, there's something new to learn. Having 2 sons before this baby is not a guarantee that we can raise another baby perfectly. Life is full of lessons. And I think we've learnt one of them.

  2. I think it's hurting to see a baby undergo any treatments, although I have no child yet. I pray for his well-being.. I believe he is strong like his name :)

And that's so clever of you, to use "violet" from ultraviolet.. I never thought of that..
